LATEX MATTRESS BUYER’S GUIDE
Are you in the market for a new latex mattress? Do you need to know a little more about what to look out for before you commit to a purchase? Check out our latex mattress buyer’s guide below. We cover everything you need to know about latex mattresses.
NATURAL LATEX vs SYNTHETIC
Latex mattresses can be made using natural or synthetic latex. And, some latex mattresses use a combination of both materials – these mattresses are known as blended latex mattresses. Natural latex is sourced from the sap of the rubber tree. It is a 100% natural material.
Synthetic mattresses mimic the feel and characteristics of latex by creating a foam using petrochemicals. It can be difficult to tell the difference between natural latex and high-quality synthetic latex mattresses. We cover the best talalay latex mattress, the best dunlop latex, and all the top latex mattresses in 2024.
A blended mattress uses a combination of natural and synthetic latex. Natural latex is more expensive, so to keep costs down some manufacturers complement natural latex foam with synthetic foam during manufacture.
Natural latex is the preferred choice. It is an eco-friendly, incredibly comfortable, and highly durable material. However, it is more expensive. Synthetic latex is easier on the pocket but is not as durable or environmentally friendly.
DUNLOP vs TALALAY
There are two types of latex mattress on the market – Dunlop and Talalay. The distinction comes from the way the latex foam is processed and how the mattress is formed. They are both made using natural latex but have different feels due to the way they are manufactured.
A Dunlop latex mattress is denser than a Talalay and has a firmer feel. Similarly, Dunlop is heavier and more durable thanks to its high-density foam. Talalay latex mattresses are favored by people looking for a softer feel.
DENSITY & ILD
Two terms you will regularly hear when shopping for the best latex mattresses are Density and ILD. Density is used to describe the ratio of mass to volume. The density score is recorded in pounds and refers to the weight of the mattress per square foot.
ILD stands for Indentation Load Deflection. It measures the firmness of the mattress in a score that ranges from 14-44. The higher the number, the more firm the feel. A score of 44 for ILD is the firmest feeling mattress available. And, an ILD of 14 is the softest. You can use this score to choose a mattress that matches your preferred level of firmness.
PRICE
The best latex mattresses are not cheap. They are a premium product. Especially organic natural latex mattresses. Synthetic and blended latex mattresses are more affordable but still command significant price tags. There’s no getting away from the fact that latex are some of the most expensive mattresses on the market.
If you want one of the best latex mattresses on the market you are going to have to be prepared to pay premium prices. On the flip side, latex mattresses are high quality, incredibly comfortable, and highly durable. Many people see them as an excellent long-term investment.
LATEX ALLERGIES
If you’re buying a latex mattress, you need to consider latex allergies. Do you or anyone who may be sleeping on the bed have a latex allergy? It’s an important point of consideration.
Also, bear in mind that synthetic latex mattresses are made using petrochemicals and do not contain any natural latex. Blended mattresses have a mix of latex and synthetic materials. If allergies are a concern – a synthetic mattress may be the best option.
Bear in mind that many manufacturers claim that their natural latex mattresses do not trigger allergic reactions. It is claimed that the latex washing step in the manufacturing process cleans the latex of all proteins that are responsible for triggering latex allergies. However, there’s no way of telling until the mattress arrives and you get to try it out for yourself.
FIRMNESS vs SOFTNESS
Like all other types of mattress, latex mattresses are available in a range of firmness levels. Check the ILD rating to get an accurate grading of mattress firmness level. ILD is scored from 14-44. The higher the score, the firmer the feel of the mattress.
In general, firm mattresses work best for larger individuals. And, softer mattresses work well for lightweight people. Average size people will feel most comfortable on mattresses that land somewhere in the middle.
SLEEP TRIAL PERIOD
The best latex mattresses are available with generous sleep trials. This means you get to try the mattress out, see how it feels, and then send it back no questions asked if you don’t like it. The trial period usually falls somewhere between 100-120 nights, but 365-night trials are not uncommon.
Nothing beats a test drive when it comes to seeing how the mattress feels for you. But, be careful to read the small print. You want to look out for terms like “no questions asked” and “money-back guarantee”. Also, take a look at the returns criteria and make sure it’s not overly complicated.
COOLING
Latex is a naturally breathable material – unlike memory foam. It allows heat to pass through it which means it will help keep you cool while you sleep. If you are a hot sleeper, a latex mattress should be a good fit. However, there are a couple of things to look out for.
Firstly, natural latex has a greater cooling effect compared to synthetic latex. Natural latex is very effective at drawing excess heat away from the body. Also, when it comes to natural latex – Talalay has a greater cooling effect than Dunlop.
DURABILITY
Latex mattresses are highly durable. They simply last much longer than other mattress types. So, although they come with a higher price tag, you can expect a latex mattress to outperform other types in terms of longevity.
Natural latex foam is a highly robust material. Both Talalay and Dunlop mattresses last many years. And, Dunlop in particular can last decades if properly maintained and cared for. If you are willing to fork out the cash up front you could be in for many years, if not decades, of comfortable, restful sleep.
WARRANTY
Always, take a look at the warranty of the mattress. How does it compare against similar mattresses from other companies? Most latex mattresses fall somewhere within the 10-25 year warranty range. And, the very best models come with a lifetime warranty.
Read the small print and familiarize yourself with what is covered and what is not. Warranties should cover all aspects relating to defects and premature aging. The most common issue with latex mattresses is the formation of a body impression on the mattress surface over many years.
CUSTOMER FEEDBACK
We always recommend you check customer feedback before parting with your hard-earned cash. Check the ratings for the specific mattress you want to buy. And, take a look at the company rating.
Sites like Trust Pilot, Bird Eye, and Podium specialize in publishing online customer reviews. Spending some time researching the company will give you a good idea of how they have treated their past customers.
CERTIFICATION
Take a look at the certification the mattress comes with. Third-party certificates give a level of reassurance that the mattress has been independently tested and lives up to the manufacturer’s claims.
Certificates cover a range of mattress features, including latex purity and origin, eco-friendliness, and ethical manufacture. See below for a list of industry certificates to look out for when buying a high-quality latex mattress.
• Global Organic Latex Standard
• eco-INSTITUT
• The Global Organic Textile Standard
• Rainforest Alliance
• GREENGUARD Gold
• OEKO-TEK Standard 100
Pay particular attention to the Global Organic Latex Standard certificate. This certificate is only issued for mattresses that meet strict rules regarding latex purity, eco-friendly manufacturing processes, and social responsibility. For more info see – Latex Mattress Certification.
WHAT IS A LATEX MATTRESS?
A latex mattress is made from latex foam. And, there are two types of latex foam – natural and synthetic. Natural latex mattresses are made using latex sourced from the sap of the rubber tree. Synthetic latex mattresses are made using a foam manufactured from petrochemicals. Synthetic mattresses are designed to look and feel just like natural latex.
The third type of mattress is a blended latex mattress. This uses a combination of both natural and synthetic latex. The key characteristics of a latex mattress are its natural bounce, soft cushioning comfort, and fast response rate.
They are highly durable and last many tears. They are also expensive to make so tend to command high prices. For more information check out – What Is a Latex Mattress?
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF LATEX MATTRESS
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a latex mattress? Let’s take a look at the key pros and cons of a latex mattress so you can figure out if it is the right type of mattress for you.
ADVANTAGES
SOFT CUSHIONING COMFORT
The surge in popularity of latex mattresses is largely down to their incredible comfort. Latex delivers a soft cushioning feel that allows the body to press into the mattress. Latex quickly conforms to the shape of your body and provides excellent cradling and pressure relief.
ECO-FRIENDLY
Another key advantage of a latex mattress is that they are eco-friendly. Natural latex mattresses are made from the sap of the rubber tree. This is a sustainable and 100% natural source. Latex is the mattress of choice if you want to protect the environment.
DISTINCTIVE FEEL
People that are familiar with latex mattresses love their distinctive feel. Latex foam has a natural bounce and a rapid response rate. The bounce in the mattress makes it easy to move and change position on the surface of the mattress. And, the quick response rate means it changes shape rapidly to contour the outline of your body.
HIGHLY DURABLE
Latex mattresses are incredibly durable. Especially, natural latex and organic latex mattresses. They last much longer than other mattress types. With proper care and maintenance, the best latex mattress can last many years, even decades.
DISADVANTAGES
EXPENSIVE
Latex mattresses are expensive. The sourcing and processing of latex from rubber trees is a costly operation. And, this cost is reflected in the price passed on to the consumer. On the other hand, these mattresses last longer so they represent a good long-term investment.
HEAVY
Latex mattresses are heavy. Latex foam is high density and packs a considerable weight. Its high-density nature imparts durability, but also considerable weight. Some people will struggle to lift and position a latex mattress without help.
LATEX ALLERGIES
If you are buying a latex mattress it’s worth considering latex allergies. A small number of people suffer allergies that are triggered when they come into contact with latex. Do you or any of your family suffer from a latex allergy?
For more information on the advantages and disadvantages of a latex mattress, see – The Pros & Cons of Latex Mattress.
WHO IS LATEX MATTRESS GOOD FOR?
Latex mattresses are a great choice for the vast majority of people. Their unique feel, superb comfort, responsive movement, and body contouring nature make them one of the most popular types of mattress on the market today. While they are an excellent fit for most people, they work best for the people below.
SIDE, BACK & COMBINATION SLEEPERS
If soft cradling comfort is high on your list when it comes to mattress shopping, then look no further than a latex mattress. Their fast response rate means they rapidly contour around you and gently cushion your body weight. They work well for side sleepers, back sleepers, and combination sleepers.
HOT SLEEPERS
Latex has a natural cooling ability. Latex foam draws trapped heat away from the body while you sleep. This is especially true for natural latex mattresses. They perform much better than memory foam mattresses for hot sleepers.
PEOPLE LOOKING FOR DURABILITY
Latex mattresses are highly durable. The best latex mattresses are known to last decades. If you are looking for a good long-term investment and a mattress that will be with you for many years – then a latex mattress is a great option.
PEOPLE WITH ALLERGIES
Latex mattresses are naturally hypoallergenic – great for people with allergies! This means they are less likely to trigger a reaction compared to other mattress materials. Latex foam is naturally resistant to molds, dust mites, and other unwanted critters that are responsible for allergy problems.
WHO IS LATEX MATTRESS NOT GOOD FOR?
A latex mattress may not be a great choice for everyone. Depending on your individual mattress preferences and personal circumstances, a latex mattress may not be a good choice for you. Below we outline those that a latex mattress may not be good for.
PEOPLE ON A BUDGET
Latex mattresses are expensive. The best latex mattresses are made using natural latex sourced from the sap of the rubber tree. It is an ideal material for making mattresses but involves a costly manufacturing process. If you are on a budget you may prefer a cheaper mattress type.
PEOPLE THAT DON’T WANT A HEAVY MATTRESS
Latex mattresses are made using latex foam. It is a dense material and the mattresses are heavy. If you don’t want a heavy mattress, then a latex mattress is a good option. Some people will need help lifting them and positioning them on a bed frame.
PEOPLE WITH LATEX ALLERGIES
If you have a latex allergy then a latex mattress is obviously not the best choice. You don’t want to sleep on a mattress that might trigger an unpleasant reaction. However, many manufacturers claim their latex mattresses will not cause an allergic reaction as they have been specially washed during manufacturing to remove all allergy-triggering latex proteins.
STOMACH SLEEPERS
A stomach sleeper needs a firm mattress that provides lots of support. Most latex mattresses are responsive and contour the shape of your body. While this is great for comfort and pressure relief it is not the best quality for stomach sleepers.
HOW DOES LATEX COMPARE TO OTHER TYPES OF MATTRESS
Let’s take a look at how latex mattresses stack up against other types of mattress. There are four main other types of mattress – memory foam, hybrid, innerspring, and polyfoam. Below we look at each in more detail.
LATEX vs MEMORY FOAM
PRICE
One of the most striking differences between a latex mattress and a memory foam mattress is the price. This is because a latex mattress is seen as a premium product. In general, they are more durable than memory foam and will last many years longer.
FEEL
Latex and memory foam have a very different feel. Latex has a springy bounce that assists responsive movement. It makes it easier to move around the surface of the mattress during the night. Memory foam doesn’t have this push-back response. Your body gently sinks into the mattress surface and the foam will absorb movement instead of bouncing.
COOLING
Latex mattresses perform better in terms of cooling. The foam used to make latex mattresses has a natural ability to allow excess heat to move away from the body as you sleep. Memory foams often struggle in this area. They tend to insulate the body and heat can accumulate during the night.
HYPOALLERGENIC
Latex mattresses are hypoallergenic. They are much less likely to trigger an allergic reaction compared to memory foam. Latex repels mold, dust mites, and other allergens. Memory foam mattresses are much more likely to attract and accumulate such allergens.
MOTION ISOLATION
If you want a mattress that absorbs motion – then go for a memory foam. Memory foams isolate and absorb motion. The foam slowly changes shape in response to pressure. On the other hand, a latex mattress has poor motion isolation. The foam used in a latex mattress has a natural springy bouncy feel.
Want to learn more about the best memory foam mattresses? For more information check out our guide – The Best Memory Foam Mattresses 2024.
LATEX vs HYBRID
A hybrid mattress is a type of mattress that uses more than one mattress type in a single mattress. The most common example is a memory foam and innerspring hybrid. This mattress consists of a spring core at the base and a memory foam layer on top. Let’s take a look at how this type of hybrid differs from a latex mattress.
PRICE
Hybrid mattresses can be expensive. They combine two types of mattress technology and the best hybrids use high-quality materials that outstanding results. Although the price of a hybrid is high, the price of a latex mattress is usually higher. The best latex mattresses are premium products.
Want to learn more about the best hybrid mattresses? For more information check out our guide – The Best Hybrid Mattresses 2024.
FEEL
Latex mattresses have a springy feel that pushes back when you lay on them. The foam quickly changes shape to allow your body to sink into it. And, they provide excellent pressure relief and soft cushioning.
A hybrid mattress with a memory foam comfort layer will also deliver soft cushioning but with a slow response rate. The foam absorbs motion and slowly conforms to the shape of your body. However, the spring coil below delivers responsive movement and reliable bounce.
COOLING
But latex and hybrids perform well when it comes to cooling. Latex foam has a natural ability to disperse heat and prevent it from accumulating around your body.
A hybrid on the other hand allows air to circulate through the spring core on the lower side of the mattress. This movement of air helps keep the memory foam above cool.
DURABILITY
Latex mattresses are more durable than hybrids. Especially natural latex mattresses. Although hybrids are considered good quality mattresses, latex mattresses edge it in terms of longevity.
LATEX vs INNERSPRING
How does a latex mattress compare to an innerspring mattress? An innerspring mattress is what many people consider a traditional mattress. They consist of a spring core of coils that are often pocketed. And, above the springs sits a thin comfort layer.
PRICE
Latex mattresses are more expensive than innerspring mattresses. A latex mattress is a high-end product and comes with a price tag to match. The high price reflects the superior comfort, pressure-relieving, and durability characteristics of a latex foam mattress.
FEEL
It’s hard to beat the feel of a latex mattress. The quick response of latex foam rapidly changes shape to cradle your body, relieve pressure, and cushion your weight. Although many innerspring mattresses are incredibly comfortable, they have a very different feel from a latex mattress.
Innerspring mattresses don’t deliver the same level of body contouring and pressure relief as latex. However, both mattresses perform well in terms of responsive movement. Latex foam and coiled springs deliver a bouncy feel that many people favor.
COOLING
Both these mattresses perform well in cooling. Latex foam is a naturally cooling material. It allows heat to move away from the body while you sleep to prevent you from getting too hot during the night. And, an innerspring allows ample airflow between the springs that facilitates the movement of warm air away from the surface.
PRESSURE RELIEF
Latex mattresses outperform innersprings when it comes to pressure relief. Latex foam has an inherent ability to quickly change shape in response to the weight of your body. It rapidly contours around you and allows your body to press into the mattress surface. It is a superb mattress choice for pressure relief. And, it feels incredibly comfortable for side sleepers, back sleepers, and combination sleepers.
DURABILITY
Latex mattresses are more durable than their innerspring cousins. A good quality natural latex mattress can last decades. They are an excellent long-term investment and treated with care will give you many years of comfortable sleep.
LATEX vs POLYFOAM
Polyfoam mattresses are similar to memory foam but they use a cheaper type of foam called polyurethane. You can expect many of the same features and characteristics of polyfoam as you get from memory foam but they just don’t reach the same heights.
This means a latex mattress will outperform a polyfoam mattress in all areas except price and motion isolation. Let’s take a closer look below.
PRICE
Polyfoam mattresses are one of the most affordable mattress types available. They are made using an inexpensive foam and are much cheaper than latex mattresses. In fact, they’re also cheaper than memory foam mattresses. However, quality can be unreliable.
FEEL
When it comes to comfort there is no comparison between a latex mattress and a polyfoam mattress. Latex mattresses are much more comfortable. Polyfoam mattresses lag behind.
Latex mattresses quickly conform to the shape of your body, relieve pressure on the hips and shoulders, and gently cushion your body weight. Polyfoam mattresses provide a certain level of soft cushioning but don’t meet the high standards of a latex mattress.
COOLING
Latex foam has an inherent cooling ability. They allow heat to move away from your body and provide a cool and comfortable night’s sleep. Polyfoam mattresses have a very poor cooling effect. In fact, they contour around your body and have an insulating effect. This traps heat in place and allows it to accumulate while you sleep. This is not good news for hot sleepers.
DURABILITY
There is no contest between a latex and polyfoam mattress in terms of durability. Latex mattresses are incredibly durable, especially natural latex variants. They can last decades. Polyfoams mattresses don’t perform well when it comes to durability. Most models begin to lose shape after five years of service.
MOTION ISOLATION
One area where a polyfoam outperforms a latex mattress is in motion isolation. Latex mattresses have a natural springy feel. Polyfoam has the opposite feel, it absorbs motion and there is no push back. This has the effect of isolating motion. Some people prefer mattresses that isolate motion and do not feel bouncy.
LATEX MATTRESS & SLEEPING POSITIONS
How does latex for work for each sleeping position? Are you a side sleeper, back sleeper, stomach sleeper, or combination sleeper? Below we examine how a latex mattress works for each sleeping position.
SIDE SLEEPERS
Latex mattresses are great for side sleepers. They have a rapid response rate which means they quickly change shape to cushion and contour around your body. When you sleep on your side on a latex mattress, your hips and shoulders will sink into the mattress surface.
This is ideal for relieving pressure on these stress areas. The shape-changing nature of latex also allows for a more natural spinal position when you sleep on your side. Latex mattresses are an excellent choice for side sleepers.
One consideration for side sleepers when buying a latex mattress is body weight. Heavy people, (over 230 pounds), will need a firmer mattress to prevent them from sinking too deeply into the mattress surface. And similarily, lightweight people under 120 pounds will feel more comfortable on a softer mattress.
BACK SLEEPERS
Latex mattresses are a great choice for back sleepers. They offer excellent support, responsive bounce, and lumbar support. The trick is to choose a mattress with the correct level of firmness. Back sleepers need to strike a delicate balance between firm support and gentle cushioning.
Most back sleepers will find medium-firm latex mattresses work well for them. Aim for a mattress that provides plenty of stability but still feels comfortable. Latex mattresses allow your body to press into the springy latex foam. This is a feature we covered in our unbiased mattress reviews 2023.
You will need to take your body weight into account when choosing the best mattress firmness. Heavier individuals will need a firmer feel and lightweight people will feel more comfortable on a soft mattress. Once you get the firmness level right, the latex will contour your body and promote proper alignment of your hips, shoulders, and spine – for a super comfortable night’s sleep.
STOMACH SLEEPERS
Stomach sleeping is the least common sleeping position. And it is a difficult sleeping position to feel comfortable in. When you sleep on your stomach you place additional pressure on your back and your neck can feel strained.
Stomach sleepers need a mattress that provides lots of support to help promote a natural spinal alignment while you sleep. Most latex mattresses will feel too ‘spongy’ for stomach sleepers. The body cradling and contouring features will have too much give for most stomach sleepers.
If you are a stomach sleeper and want a latex mattress, you should aim for a mattress with a firm feel that delivers the support you need to feel comfortable and align your body while you sleep.
COMBINATION SLEEPERS
Combination sleepers will feel very comfortable on a latex mattress. Most combination sleepers rotate between the side sleeping and back sleeping positions. And, a latex mattress performs incredibly well for both these positions.
The quick response, excellent support, and gentle cradling of latex foam deliver just the right level of soft cushioning and pressure relief – while also supporting your body weight. The foam allows your body to sink in, just a little, to relieve strain on pressure points and delivers the stability needed to promote good spinal alignment and lumbar support.
LATEX MATTRESS CERTIFICATION
If you are considering buying a latex mattress and need some reassurance about the claims being made by the mattress manufacturers – check out the certification that the mattress has been awarded.
Several high-profile certification bodies test and determine if a latex mattress meets their strict acceptance criteria. See below for all you need to know about latex mattress certification.
GLOBAL ORGANIC LATEX STANDARD (GOLS)
This is the gold standard when it comes to organic latex mattresses. This body issues certificates to mattresses that have been made from at least 95% organic latex and are free from toxic chemicals.
To be awarded a GOLS certificate manufacturers must meet a set of strict criteria governing the harvesting, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, and sustainability of latex used in the production of the mattress.
To receive GOLS certification the product must be already GOTS or Eco-INSTITUT certified, see below.
GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STANDARD (GOTS)
The Global Organic Textile Standard monitors the handling of textiles from the field to the store shelf. There are two classifications in GOTS certification – made with organic and organic.
A ‘made with organic’ means the product must contain at least 70% organic material. While a product awarded an ‘organic’ label must contain at least 95% organic material.
ECO-INSTITUT
An Eco-INSTITUT label is awarded for products that have little to no emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These volatile chemicals include formaldehyde, toxic fire retardants, and heavy metals. An Eco-INSTITUT label indicates that a product is safe for home use.
GREENGUARD GOLD
GREENGUARD Gold testing is similar to Eco-INSTITUT. A GREENGUARD Gold label indicates that there is little to no emission of volatile organic compounds. However, it is primarily concerned with protecting vulnerable groups of people such as children and the elderly.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 runs over 100 tests on a product to look for the presence of harmful materials. Textile products such as mattresses are also tested for materials that are considered disadvantageous to human health but are not illegal.

BEST LATEX MATTRESS FOR SIDE SLEEPERS
SAATVA ZENHAVEN LATEX MATTRESS REVIEW
The best latex mattress for side sleepers is the Saatva Zenhaven latex mattress. Its soft cushioning latex foam cradles your body weight, relieves pressure on key stress points, and feels great when sleeping on your side.
It’s made from natural Talalay foam and organic cotton and wool. If you are a side sleeper and looking for a latex mattress you’ll love the Zenhaven.
OVERVIEW
MATTRESS CONSTRUCTION
The Zenhaven is a natural latex mattress. It is made from Talalay latex foam and 100% organic materials. It is a flippable mattress – meaning you can choose from two firmness options. The luxury plush comfort side has a softer cushioning feel and the gentle firm side provides more support.
COMFORT LAYER
Both the luxury plush and gentle firm sides of the mattress are made using antimicrobial Talalay latex. The luxury plush side has a spongier feel and is favored by most people. It provides superb soft cushioning that relieves pressure on the hips and shoulders when sleeping on your side.
MATTRESS CORE
The core of the mattress consists of two thick layers of Talalay latex that are compressed together. This foam is denser and provides stable support to the two comfort layers on either side. The mattress is encased in a woven cotton and wool cover.
FLIPPABLE – FIRMNESS OPTIONS
One of the key features of the Zenhaven is that it can be flipped. It has two sleeping surfaces and each offers a different firmness level. The softer of the two is the luxury plush soft cushioning side. We feel this side is ideal for most side sleepers.
Individuals that prefer a firmer feel can simply flip the mattress and sleep on the gentle firm side. This side uses a denser latex foam and is a great fit for heavier individuals that like to sleep on their side. We think the choice of two firmness options is a great selling point for the Zenhaven.
SIDE SLEEPING
This is the best latex mattress for side sleeping. The luxury plush side of the mattress strikes a superb balance between soft cushioning and reliable support. When you lay on your side it allows your body to press into the foam and relieves pressure on the hips and shoulders.
We’ve scored the luxury plush surface a 6 on the firmness scale. And, it works well for side sleepers of most body shapes on sizes. Heavier individuals and people that prefer a firmer feel can flip the mattress and enjoy the increased support of the gentle firm side. This side offers more resistance and pushback.
COOLING EFFECT
This mattress performs well when it comes to cooling. If you are a hot sleeper or live in a hot climate the Zenhaven should keep you feeling cool during the night. The use of natural Talalay latex foam and a breathable organic cotton cover allows warm air to escape the area around your body while you sleep.
PRESSURE RELIEF
Pressure relief is key when it comes to side sleeping. When you sleep on your side you place increased weight on your shoulders and hips. This pressure needs to be relieved by the mattress to prevent pain and stiffness.
The Zenhaven performs outstandingly well for pressure relief – especially the luxury plush side. The spongy latex foam allows your shoulders and hips to press into the mattress surface and provides just the right amount of sinkage to minimize pressure in these areas.
HYPOALLERGENIC
The Zenhaven is a naturally hypoallergenic mattress. It uses natural Talalay latex foam that is mold and dust mite resistant. The mattress cover is made from organic cotton and GOTS-certified New Zealand wool. Both these materials are microbial resistant which will be a welcome feature for people who suffer from allergies.
PROS
GREAT FOR SIDE SLEEPERS
This is the best latex mattress for side sleepers. The luxury plush side allows your body to gently sink into the springy latex foam and it feels great laying sleeping on your side. And, if you find the latex too soft, just flip it over and enjoy the medium-firm surface below.

If you’re looking for a mattress with gentle cushioning and excellent pressure relief – this could be the one for you. The luxury plush surface has a soft springy feel that allows your body to press into the latex foam. It does a great job of relieving pressure on stress points such as the knees, hips, and shoulders.
TWO FIRMNESS OPTIONS

COOLING EFFECT
It performs well in terms of cooling effect. The natural Talalay foam helps prevent an accumulation of heat around the body. And, the all-natural, all-organic cotton and New Zealand wool cover allow air to freely circulate.
DURABILITY
The Zenhaven is a high-end latex mattress made using high-quality natural products. And, the mattress is durable. You can expect it to be around for many years. It will outlive many other mattress types and the manufacturer offers a lifetime warranty covering repairs and replacements for defects.
CONS
SOFT CUSHIONING
The luxury plush side of this mattress has a soft cushioning rapid response. This means your body will quickly press down into the foam when you lay down. For firmness, we’ve scored it a 6 out of 10. This may be too soft for some people. However, the mattress is flippable and the medium-firm surface below provides a firmer sleeping surface.
BOUNCY FEEL
The Zenhaven has a bouncy feel. It’s a distinctive feature of latex mattresses. If you prefer mattresses with a non-responsive feel you may prefer memory foam. Memory foam slowly absorbs your body weight without delivering a pushback.
PRICE
The Zenhaven is not cheap. It uses high-end materials in its construction – natural Talalay latex, organic cotton, and certified organic New Zealand wool. It’s a high-quality mattress and comes with a price tag to match.

NOLAH NATURAL LATEX MATTRESS REVIEW
The Nolah Natural is the best latex mattress for back sleepers. Its latex foam comfort layers gently cradle your body weight and relieve pressure while the spring core below uses three distinct zones to optimize spinal alignment while you sleep.
OVERVIEW
MATTRESS CONSTRUCTION
COVER
The Nolah Natural latex hybrid mattress is made up of multiple layers. First up is the mattress cover. This is made using GOTS certified organic cotton and a layer of breathable organic wool. The cotton surface has a soft luxurious feel while the wool layer below promotes airflow and is naturally fire retardent.
COMFORT LAYER
Beneath this lies two layers of Talalay latex foam. The first layer is made using 2” inches of pressure-relieving, springy natural latex. The second layer consists of 1” inch of more robust supportive latex. Both these layers are hole-punched to stimulate air flow and cooling effect.
SPRING CORE
Next up is Nolah’s patented HDMax tri-zone spring coil core. This 8” inch spring core is segmented into three sections each offering tailored support levels to optimize spinal alignment. The spring coils are individually wrapped in organic cotton.
BASE
The base of the Nolah latex mattress is protected using a bottom support layer of durable organic wool and cotton.
MATTRESS FEEL
The Nolah Natural has a soft spongy feel thanks to the natural Talalay used in its comfort layers. The mattress feels a little softer than other latex mattresses on this list and we’ve scored it a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
The pocketed spring base delivers great support and bounce which means you’ll have no difficulty moving around and repositioning on the mattress surface. The spongy latex comfort layers cradle your body weight and deliver excellent pressure relief. And, the tri-zone spring coil below feels great for back sleepers.
BACK SLEEPERS
The Nolah Natural is our choice for the best latex mattress for back sleepers. It combines the soft cushioning effect of two latex comfort layers with the support and responsive movement of a spring core.
The Talalay latex gently cradles your body weight and allows the shoulders and hips to gently press into the foam. The spring coils beneath have been divided into three zones – each with a unique firmness level. This tri-zone system optimizes your body position to promote correct spinal alignment – which is ideal for back sleepers.
Body weight is a factor when picking the best mattress for any sleeping position. And, we feel that the Nolah Natural is best suited to back sleepers weighing between 130-230lbs. Lighter back sleepers will feel more comfortable in a softer mattress and heavier individuals may prefer a firmer model that has more support.
COOLING EFFECT
This mattress performs strongly when it comes to cooling. The two latex comfort layers are hole-punched to facilitate airflow. And, the spring base beneath is ideal for allowing air to circulate throughout the mattress while you sleep.
These features help keep you cool while you sleep as warm air is drawn away from the surface of the mattress. If you’re a hot sleeper we think you’ll be very happy with the cooling ability of the Nolah Natural.
NATURAL MATERIALS
The Nolah latex hybrid makes great use of natural materials. If you want to minimize your carbon footprint, this mattress will appeal to you. All the wool and cotton used in this mattress comes with GOTS certification.

MOTION TRANSFER
The Nolah Natural mattress has a bouncy and responsive feel. The natural Talalay latex foam has a quick response rate allowing it to quickly change shape in response to your body. This characteristic coupled with the spring core below means the mattress responds to movement.
The Nolah Natural does not significantly isolate motion. If you are sharing the bed with a partner you will most likely feel their movement on the other side of the mattress. Latex and springs do not isolate motion in the same way as memory foam.
PROS
GREAT FOR BACK SLEEPERS
The Nolah Natural is the best latex mattress for back sleepers. Its dual Talalay latex comfort layers deliver soft cushioning support and the three-zone coil base below provides targetted support for proper spinal alignment.

STOMACH SLEEPERS
The Nolah Natural has a soft feel which may not be ideal for stomach sleepers. If stomach sleeping is your preferred position, you may feel more comfortable on a firmer mattress that offers more support.

This is a firm mattress. It delivers reliable support. The combination of coil springs and 3” inch latex comfort layer create more firm feel, compared to your average latex mattress.
GREAT FOR HOT SLEEPERS
It’s a hybrid. And, like all hybrids, it delivers excellent airflow. If you tend to sleep hot, this mattress will help keep you cool during the night.
BACK SLEEPERS
The Brooklyn EcoSleep works best for back sleepers. Thanks to its high level of firmness, individuals who sleep on their back will find this most comfortable.
EDGE SUPPORT
The mattress has excellent edge support. It delivers stable support all along the mattress edges thanks to the coil spring base. You can sit on the mattress edge without experiencing significant bend below you
CONS
SIDE SLEEPERS
This mattress may be too firm for side sleepers. Especially light weight individuals. Those weighing less than 130 lbs may struggle to find comfort in the firm feel and shallow 3” inch latex comfort layer.
TOO FIRM FOR SOME
And, it will be too firm for some. We’ve scored it an 8/10 for firmness. This is well above average. If you like a soft-feel, cushioning mattress this will not be the one for you.
MOTION TRANSFER
It also struggles to isolate motion. Thanks to the spring base, motion created on one side of the mattress can be clearly felt on the other mattress side. This is an important consideration for couples sharing a bed.

VERDICT
The Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep is a worthy runner-up in the best latex mattress 2024 list. If you’re looking for a firm-feeling, latex hybrid you’re in luck. This mattress provides stable support thanks to a relatively shallow latex comfort layer of just 3” inches and a pocketed coil spring base. It’s a good mattress for larger individuals and those who like to sleep on their back. It comes with a 120-night sleep trial, free shipping, and a 10-year warranty.
