Factors That Affect Latex Mattress Life Expectancy

How Long Will a Latex Mattress Last? Latex mattresses are one of the most popular and most durable mattress types on the market today. A good quality latex mattress will outlast any other mattress type – if treated with care. In general, you can expect a latex mattress to last 15 years. And, the Best Latex Mattresses treated with care will last as long as 20 years. However several factors influence the life expectancy of a latex mattress, see below.

The Quality of the Latex Foam

The quality of the latex foam plays a central role in the life expectancy of a latex mattress. In short, the better the quality – the longer you can expect the mattress to last. The best quality latex mattresses are made from natural organic latex foam – sourced from the sap of the rubber tree. Synthetic latex is cheaper but not as durable.

You can expect organic latex mattresses to last at least 15 years and up to 20 if treated with care. Synthetic mattresses tend to last anywhere between 10-15 years. And, blended latex, a mixture of the two types falls somewhere in between.

Level of Usage

The more the mattress is used, the more it will wear and the shorter its lifespan. And, conversely, latex mattresses that receive only occasional usage will last longer. Most home mattresses are slept on every night. However, some mattresses are slept on more or less frequently based on lifestyle and home arrangements.

For example, a latex mattress in a guest bedroom may be slept on only occasionally. And, on the other hand, if someone is bed-bound they will be spending extended periods resting on the mattress. Level of usage plays a central role in determining how long a latex mattress will last.

Level of Maintenance the Mattress Receives

The life expectancy of a latex mattress can be maximized by practicing good mattress maintenance and care techniques. For example, using a mattress protector is a great way of keeping a mattress clean and preventing staining and accumulation of odor. Regular mattress cleaning helps prevent the build-up of dust and debris in a latex mattress.

Other latex mattress care practices include mattress rotation, mattress flipping, and following all manufacturer’s guidelines concerning mattress care. Note, not all latex mattresses can be flipped but mattress rotation is recommended for all mattresses. This practice delays sagging and prolongs mattress lifespan.

The Individuals Size & Weight

The size and weight of the individual sleeping on the mattress will have an impact on how long a latex mattress will last. A smaller lightweight individual will place less pressure on the latex foam compared to a heavy individual.

Mattresses that are sued by heavy individuals will not last as long as those used by lightweight people. Increased body weight will place extra pressure on the foam and cause it to compress more quickly over time. Heavier individuals should choose latex mattresses with a firm feel and additional support.

How to Maximize the Life Expectancy of a Latex Mattress

A latex mattress treated with care will last many years. While 15 years is the average lifespan of a latex mattress – one treated with care can last 20 years. Here are our top tips on how to maximize the lifespan of a latex mattress and get the most from your investment.

Mattress Protector

The single greatest step you can take to maximize the lifespan of a latex mattress is to use a mattress protector. It is also one of the simplest changes you can make. Mattress protectors create a physical barrier and sit between the mattress surface and your bed sheet. They shield the latex foam from spills, dirt, and grime. They are affordable and highly effective. For more information, check out – What Is a Mattress Protector?

Clean Mattress Regularly

Another great way of ensuring you get as many years as possible from your latex mattress is to perform regular cleaning. This will keep the latex foam and tip-top shape and maximize performance. Cleaning is easy and can be performed every 3-4 months. Check your manufacturer’s guidelines for specific instructions. And, see our full guide for more – How to Clean a Latex Mattress.

Mattress Rotation

Another great way of prolonging the lifespan of a latex mattress is to perform regular mattress rotation. This involves spinning the mattress around so the space where you rest your head is moved to the foot area – and vice versa. Do not confuse rotation with flipping. They’re two different things.  Not all latex mattresses can be flipped. Some have a dedicated sleeping surface.

Mattress Flipping

If your latex mattress has two slipping surfaces it is suitable for flipping. Not all mattresses can be flipped, but some are designed with a sleeping surface on either side of the mattress. If this is the case, you can occasionally flip the mattress to change the sleeping surface. This gives the sleeping area a rest and helps delay sagging. Check with the manufacturer to see if your latex mattress can be flipped.

Use a Suitable Bed Frame

It goes without saying that you should be using a suitable bed frame or support for a latex mattress. If the mattress is not resting on a suitable support it will not perform as designed and its lifespan may be shortened. A strong bed frame that provides adequate support is a must. Check with the manufacturer for guidelines on the type of support needed for your specific mattress.

Do Not Fold or Bend

Do not fold or bend the mattress. Latex mattresses should not be folded, rolled, or bent. They must remain flat at all times – even when being moved or transported. Folding and bending compact the foam and damages the structural design. This compromises overall performance and longevity.

Change Bed Clothes Regularly

An often overlooked aspect of latex mattress care is bed clothes. You should regularly change and wash your bed clothes to keep the mattress clean and free from sweat, dirt, and unpleasant odors. Maintaining a clean and fresh mattress prolongs its performance and lifespan. Strip the sheets, pillowcases, and blankets regularly. Put them through a laundry cycle and return to the bed clean, fresh, and smelling like new.

No Jumping or Standing

Avoid jumping or standing on the mattress. Excess weight on a footprint area can damage the latex foam and lead to spot sagging. As tempting as it is to jump on a bouncy latex mattress – you must avoid it. Sagging and denting will lead to an uncomfortable sleeping surface and damage the supportive performance of the mattress.

How Do You Know When Your Latex Mattress Needs Replacing?

How do you know when you need to change a latex mattress? What are the telltale signs? The signs you need to look out for are visible wear and tear, indentations or sagging, lumps and bumps, and crucially a change in support and comfort levels. If you notice any visible changes to the sleeping surface or are waking up in pain – then it’s time to replace your latex mattress.

Visible Wear & Tear

Are there any signs of physical wear and tear? When you remove the bed sheets you should assess the mattress for damage. Is the mattress surface even? Are there any noticeable lumps or bumps? Has the foam been stained or damaged in a specific area? If the mattress has clear visible signs of damage it may be time to invest in a new mattress.

Indentations & Sagging

Are there any visible signs of indentations or sagging on the mattress surface? Sagging occurs when the mattress begins to sink in a specific area. It usually occurs in the area where the body most frequently lies on the mattress surface. It is caused by compression and the breaking down of the latex foam. Sagging and indentations affect body alignment, support, and comfort.

Reduced Comfort & Support

Is the mattress under performing? What about support?  Is it providing reduced levels of comfort or support compared to when it was first bought? Over time, latex foam will compress and lose its shape and support. When this happens you will notice the mattress is not as comfortable as it once was. When this happens, it’s time to change your mattress.

Dunlop vs Talalay Latex

Which is better? And, which lasts longer – a Dunlop latex mattress or a Talalay latex mattress? Two types of latex foam are used to produce latex mattresses – Dunlop and Talalay. Both are produced using the sap of the rubber tree but they each have a set of unique characteristics thanks to the manufacturing technique used to create the foam.

Dunlop latex has a denser and firmer feel. It is used to create slightly more solid mattresses. And, Talalay latex foam is well known for its lighter and bouncier feel. Talalay mattresses are usually more expensive as they involve a more complex manufacturing process.
