HOW WE REVIEW THE MATTRESSES

How do we review and rate the most comfortable matresses?  We take a careful methodical approach when it comes to reviewing mattresses. Our team has developed a series of tests we apply to each mattress to grade it and rank it amongst its competitors in terms of comfort, quality, and value for money.

BUILD QUALITY

Has the mattress been well built? What about the materials used? And, what level of quality has been used in sourcing the individual components? The first thing we do when we review a mattress is take a close look at the build quality.

We open the mattress up and examine its construction from the inside out. We assess the materials used, layer by layer, and score them based on their quality, durability, and practicality.

By taking an objective approach we compare the build quality of each mattress against its competition and assign a score. This allows us to rate mattresses across the board and rank them in terms of build quality.

VALUE FOR MONEY

A new mattress is a significant investment for any household, so value for money is critical. Our team evaluates the cost of the mattress, the quality of materials used to build it, and the overall comfort level it offers.

This way we can advise if a mattress is good value for money. Not all mattresses are priced equally and you need to know if reaching for a more expensive model is worth the money.

While the price of a product often reflects the level of quality on offer, it is not always the case. Our team put each mattress through its paces to determine if the price tag is a fair reflection for the mattress being offered.

COMFORT

Comfort is key. We all want a comfortable mattress. However, mattress comfort can be subjective. It is influenced by body type, sleeping position, and mattress type.

That’s why we review all the different mattress types so you can quickly find what you’re looking for. We also provide info on how suitable each mattress type is depending on your body type, size, and your preferred sleeping position.

We also examine features that affect sleep quality such as mattress firmness, motion isolation, edge support, and responsive movement. These characteristics play a critical role in determining the comfort level of each mattress.

FIRMNESS vs SOFTNESS

Some people prefer a firm mattress, while others prefer a soft one. Then many lean towards a mattress that lies somewhere in the middle.  Firmness plays a key role in determining the most comfortable foam mattress.

mother and daughter on a new mattress

We examine each mattress and test its level of firmness. We score this out of ten. Most mattresses lie within a score of 5 to 9 out of ten. Five is a soft mattresss, six medium-soft, seven medium, eight medium-firm, and nine firm.

These scores are applied to make it easy for you to understand the level of firmness or softness of each mattress. We recommend soft mattresses for petite individuals and firm mattresses for heavier people. Anyone in between will tend to prefer the medium firmness options.

MOTION TRANSFER

Motion transfer is an unwanted feature found in many mattresses. It refers to the travel of motion through the mattress. For example, if your partner moves on one side of the mattress and you feel considerable movement on your side – then your mattress suffers a high level of motion transfer.

Motion isolation refers to the ability of a mattress to contain motion to the area it originated in. This means if your partner moves on their side of the bed – you feel little or no movement on your side.

Motion transfer is an undesirable quality in a mattress. It is often found in cheaper mattress types and old innerspring models. We test each mattress for motion transfer and so you will know exactly what to expect.  It is also referred to as motion isolation.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Recent years have seen a surge in online mattress retailers and impressive glossy tv advertisements. At first glance, these companies and their mattresses look great. But, do they live up to these first impressions when it comes to customer service.

We do the research to assess the manufacturer’s level of customer service so that we recommend only reputable mattress suppliers on our site. We look at their sleep trial period, returns policy, number of returns, and warranty to gauge their level of genuine customer service.

We’ll help you avoid companies that make life difficult. Some suppliers advertise free returns policy but then institute a returns process that is difficult to navigate. We’ll help you avoid these companies.

ASSESS MANUFACTURER’S CLAIMS

We take a look at the advertising claims made for each mattress and test them out to see if they hold true. Companies that make accurate assertions about their products are to be trusted.

We favor companies that provide honest and transparent product descriptions and don’t make bogus claims about their mattresses. Being up-front and clear about what is on offer ranks highly in our reviewing system.

MATTRESS COOLING

Are you a hot sleeper? Some people tend to get warm when they sleep. If this is the case for you, you will need a mattress that provides good cooling.

elderly lady comfortable in bed on a cooling mattress

Some mattresses are better than others at circulating air through the mattress. This helps prevent the build-up of warm air and provides a more comfortable and cooling effect.

We assess mattresses for their cooling ability. These mattresses are great for ‘hot sleepers’. Instead of insulating the body and trapping heat, they allow it to dissipate and cool the body during the night.

OFF GASSING

Some new mattresses emit an unpleasant odor when they are first unpacked. This is called off-gassing. It happens when volatile organic compounds used in the manufacturing process seep from the mattress materials.

It is most commonly found in mattresses that are wrapped, sealed, and packed into boxes shortly after they are manufactured. While the smells are unpleasant, they are generally considered harmless and only last for a few days.

Off-gassing occurs in mattresses that use polyfoam or memory foam. It is a characteristic we examine every time we review a mattress. And, if we experience an unpleasant off-gassing odor we will highlight it.

NOISE LEVELS

Some beds are just noisier than others. We test each bed for noise levels. Some bouncing up and down, tossing and turning, and climbing in and out quickly gives us an idea of how noisy a bed is.

We’ll let you know if a bed is noisy. It’s safe to say, everyone prefers a quiet bed. You don’t want a noisy bed disrupting your night’s sleep.  Or, whatever else you may get up to.

WHICH TYPE OF MATTRESS IS MOST COMFORTABLE?

What is the most comfortable type of mattress? Different types of mattress vary in comfort level due to the varying ways they are made. And, every individual will have a preference for a specific type of mattress design.

lady asleep on a latex mattress

If you are looking for the most comfortable mattress you will have to choose between an hybrid, memory foam, innerspring, poly foam, latex, or airbed mattress. Let’s take a look at each and see what they offer in terms of comfort.

HYBRID MATTRESS

Hybrid mattresses combine two mattress types – innerspring and memory foam. The base of a hybrid mattress is an innerspring mattress and this is topped with a generous comfort layer of foam – usually memory foam.

The comfort layer must be at least 2 inches thick and often consists of multiple layers. They strike a superb balance between the springy support of an innerspring and the soft cushioning of foam.

Hybrids are an excellent choice if you are looking for comfort. They are suitable for most types of sleepers and are available in a wide range of models that cater to everyone’s needs.

They also provide excellent cooling. The innerspring support section allows airflow which has a natural cooling effect on the foam comfort layer above. They are a very popular choice for hot sleepers.

Hybrids deliver the body contouring support of memory foam with the edge support, ease of motion, and responsiveness of an innerspring.

They are more expensive than an all-foam mattress due to the combination of two technologies and they are pretty heavy – so you may need help maneuvering one into place. But, they are an excellent long-term investment in terms of comfort and durability.

If you want the soft cradling comfort of a memory foam mattress but also need the responsive movement of a spring coil mattress then a hybrid is just what you’re looking for. Check out our reviews of the Best Hybrid Mattress 2024.

MEMORY FOAM MATTRESS

Memory foam mattresses are designed to deliver a combination of soft cushioned support and gentle pressure relief. They are known for their close contouring of the body and a reassuring hugging sensation.

Memory foam has a slow response that allows it to adapt to the shape of the body lying in it. These mattresses cradle your body weight as you gently sink into them.

woman and man sitting on the edge of a mattress

They are excellent mattresses for limiting motion transfer. This means movement on one end of the mattress is largely isolated to that area and doesn’t travel across the mattress. This makes them a very comfortable option for couples.

The soft cradling effect appeals to people with chronic illnesses such as arthritis and fibromyalgia. The slow cushioning response provides excellent pressure relief – great for tired limbs and sore joints.

There are some drawbacks though. They are not suitable for heavy people who need a mattress that provides greater support. Heavy people sink too deeply into the memory foam, become too hot, and feel uncomfortable.

Some models tend to sleep too hot. The all-foam mattress doesn’t have the same airflow as an innerspring and they tend to insulate your body as the foam contours its shape.

Hot sleepers should look for memory foam mattresses that have been built using cooling technologies such as gel-infused or open-cell foam. Or, go for an innerspring or hybrid as they offer better airflow.  Check out our reviews of the Best Memory Foam Mattresses.

LATEX MATTRESS

Latex mattresses are becoming increasingly popular. They are incredibly comfortable mattresses with a light airy feel and lots of bounce. They are made by combining multiple layers of latex foam.

Latex mattresses can be made from natural latex, synthetic latex, or a blend of the two. Natural latex is an organic material, toxin-free, and is naturally resistant to mold and dust mites. They are a great choice for people with allergies.

Two types of latex are used – Talalay and Dunlop. Talay is a lighter, springier material and is often used in the comfort layers. Dunlop is a firmer and highly durable form of latex. It is used in both the comfort and support layers.

A latex mattress cradles your body without hugging it. There is much less sinkage compared to a memory foam or poly foam model. A latex mattress spreads your body weight out over a large area – providing superb support. This makes them a very popular choice for people with back or joint pain.

They also offer excellent cooling. Because your body doesn’t sink into the mattress they don’t insulate you in the same way as other foam mattresses. They are a great choice for hot sleepers.

The downsides of a latex mattress are – price and weight. They come in a little more expensive compared to other foam mattresses. And, they’re heavy. You’ll need some help unboxing and positioning one of these on your bed.  Check out our independent reviews of – The Best Latex Mattresses.

INNERSPRING MATTRESS

Most of us will be familiar with innerspring mattresses. They make up the majority of traditional mattresses across the nation. They are made using a support base of spring coils.

Innerspring mattresses are often topped with a thin comfort layer, usually foam or cotton. However, this top layer is not substantial and simply serves as a buffer for the springs.

springs inside an innerspring mattress

They are a great choice for couples as they provide excellent edge support which means more room for sleeping across the mattress surface.

Innerspring mattresses offer excellent responsive movement. This means the bounce you feel from the springs makes for effortless movement on the surface of the mattress.

They also provide excellent cooling. The space between the coils within the mattress base allows air to circulate while you sleep. This has a cooling effect that will appeal to hot sleepers.

Finally, they offer great comfort for people with mobility issues as they are easier to get in and out of compared to other models. The responsive movement provided by the bounce in the springs provides a helping hand when you try to climb in or out of bed.

POLYFOAM MATTRESS

Similar to memory foam, poly foam delivers soft cushioning and gentle support. However, it is more affordable and is more widely used in all-foam mattresses. It is also known as polyurethane or PU foam.

Poly foam is a soft, contouring, foam that is used in cheaper mattresses due to its low cost. It can vary in firmness but in general, has a faster response than memory foam. This means you will feel your body sink into it more quickly.

The quality of poly foam mattresses varies greatly as manufacturers tinker with the synthetic recipe. So, although it provides soft cushioning comfort – it often falls short in terms of durability.

High-end poly foam mattresses provide impressive comfort levels, minimum motion transfer, and contour the body just like memory foam. Manufacturers can even configure the foam to produce varying levels of firmness.

A downside to poly foam is off-gassing. When a poly foam mattress is first unboxed there can be a strong synthetic odor. Many people find this unpleasant. The good news is it will pass within a few days.

However, if you have allergies or are looking for an organic mattress – this may not be a good choice for you.  No poly foam mattresses make our top 10 most comfortable mattress list.

Another drawback is they tend sleep hot. Polyfoam is a soft material.  It insulates the body and limits air circulation beneath the mattress. If you need a cool sleep – an innerspring or hybrid mattress will work better.

AIR MATTRESS

Airbed mattresses are best used as short-term solutions. They work well if you’re away on a camping trip or have visitors over for the weekend. They don’t offer the support and comfort you need in the long term.

However, they have some advantages. They can be rolled out and inflated when needed, then deflated and stored away when not in use. This saves space in your home.

Also, some people suffering acute back pain, arthritis, or joint pain find they provide just the right level of ultra-light cushioning and support. Again, even for these purposes, they are used only in the short term.

If you’re going camping or need a temporary mattress they might just be what you’re looking for. However, no air beds make our top 10 most comfortable mattress list.

WATER MATTRESS

A water mattress offers a very unique feel. Also known as a water bed they often combine water and foam layers and are available in two models – hardside and softside waterbed mattresses.

Hardside waterbeds enclose a water mattress inside a hard wooden bed frame. There is little to these mattresses other than a water-filled mattress. They provide little support and almost no motion isolation.

man floating above a mattress

Softside waterbeds are more expensive and an upgrade on the hardside models. They do away with the wooden frame and instead introduce multiple layers of foam inside the mattress. This introduces a greater level of support and motion isolation.

All water beds have a wave feel. When you move the water within the mattress creates a wave. The strength of this wave varies greatly between models.

Cheap models have free-flowing waves, while higher-end models with foam layers and bolstered padding are semi-waveless and offer better support.

Water mattresses are used by people with sleep disorders and in helping prevent bed sores for those with limited mobility. They are also used by some people suffering orthopedic conditions such as lower back pain and arthritis.

ORGANIC MATTRESS

An organic mattress does not contain any toxins. They are 100% natural materials and do not contain any harmful chemicals.

Sourcing a mattress that is 100% organic will be a challenge but you will find many that are sustainably sourced and made using natural materials such as cotton, latex, and wool.

In terms of comfort, they perform similarly to any other mattress type. So, in general, an organic latex mattress will ‘feel’ much the same as a regular latex mattress.

The big difference will be that they are free from synthetic materials such as vinyl, polyurethane foams, dyes, and toxic glues.

In terms of comfort, organic materials tend to sleep cooler, meaning you get a cool night’s sleep as body heat dissipates. They are also a good option for people that suffer from allergies as they are free from chemicals that might trigger a reaction.

Finally, they are more sustainable and kind to the environment. They are sourced naturally and choosing an organic mattress leaves a smaller and more gentle footprint on mother earth.

SLEEPING POSITION & MATTRESS COMFORT

How does sleeping position affect mattress comfort? Depending on your preferred sleeping position you may find a specific type of mattress works best for you.

baby and puppy asleep beside eachother in bed

Are you a side sleeper, back sleeper, stomach, or combination sleeper?  What position do you like to sleep in?

SIDE SLEEPERS

More than any other position, side sleepers require a mattress that delivers pressure relief. This is because side sleepers don’t get a good spread of body weight – most of it is concentrated through the hip and shoulders.

To relieve build-up of pressure in these areas a softer mattress type is recommended that allows the hips and shoulders to sink in. This also realigns the spine to a more natural straight position – delivering a comfortable night’s sleep.

A soft to medium mattress works best for side sleepers. It provides the soft cradling that the body needs to distribute its weight more evenly and align the spine.

Side sleepers that use a mattress that is too firm run the risk of developing muscle and joint pain in the hips and shoulders. Back pain can also become a problem due to incorrect alignment of the spine.

The degree of softness required will depend on your body weight. Lighter individuals will find a soft mattress works best.

However, heavier individuals will require more support, so a medium-soft to medium mattress will be your best option.

BACK SLEEPERS

Back sleepers require a mattress that provides enough support to keep the spine aligned and enough soft cushioning to relieve pressure points on the shoulders, hips, and buttocks.

A back sleeper spreads their body weight over a larger area compared to a side sleeper. So, they don’t need such a soft mattress. A medium to medium-firm mattress will work best for most people.

Back sleepers require a mattress that provides strong support and a modest amount of soft cushioning. We recommend trying a hybrid.

This way you get the best of both worlds – excellent zonal support and responsive movement of the spring base and soft cushioning of the foam comfort layer.

The soft cushioning top layer allows soft sinkage for the shoulders and hips and the innerspring core provides spinal alignment.

Again, body size will influence the level of firmness that will work best for you. Lighter and regular-sized individuals should go for a medium firmness.

While heavier people, (over 250 pounds), will need the additional support of a medium-firm to firm mattress.

STOMACH SLEEPERS

For stomach sleepers, a medium-firm to firm mattress works best. Stomach sleepers need strong support so our advice is to avoid soft mattresses and mattresses with soft comfort layers.

woman sleeping on stomach

More than anything else, stomach sleepers need to support the hips and torso to prevent them from sinking into the mattress bed. This would lead to an unnatural spine position and pain in the neck, shoulders, and lower back.

Therefore, stomach sleepers should choose a mattress that provides ample support. Avoid soft mattresses and hybrids with soft cushioning comfort layers.

We recommend you go for a mattress that holds your body weight on the surface of the mattress and prevents you from sinking down into it.

The precise level of firmness you will need depends on your body weight. Light to regular-sized individuals should opt for a medium to medium-firm. While heavier people should choose a firm mattress for the best comfort.

COMBINATION SLEEPERS

Combination sleepers rotate through several sleeping positions throughout the night without having any one favored position. It can be any combination of side, back, or stomach sleeping.

As such, combination sleepers have the most diverse mattress requirements. The key to comfort for a combination sleeper is movement response.

Combination sleepers need a mattress that responds to their movements and assists them in changing positions during the night.

Mattresses with spring coils such as innerspring and hybrids are great solutions. So too are latex – especially natural latex. Known for its bouncy response they provide great responsive motion.

All-foam mattresses that lack bounce are not a good choice. This rules out some memory foam and poly foam models – but the springer versions are still an option.

In terms of firmness, you need to strike a balance between the requirements of all three individual sleeping positions. Therefore, we recommend going for a medium to medium-firm mattress to meet your needs.

PARTNER CONSIDERATIONS

If you share a bed with a partner you’ll need to consider what type of mattress will best accommodate your combined sleeping positions and deliver the most comfort.

Two key features to look out for when selecting a mattress for a couple are motion transfer and edge support.

Motion transfer refers to the ability of motion to travel across the mattress. When you share a bed you don’t want to feel every movement of your partner in the mattress bed. Aim for a mattress that isolates motion transfer for best comfort.

Edge support refers to the ability of a mattress to provide support right along the perimeter of the mattress. If a mattress has good edge support it provides a larger useable surface are for you and your partner.

Innerspring mattresses and good-quality hybrids are your best bet. Cheaper memory foam and poly foam mattresses have a tendency to sag at the edges.

BODY WEIGHT AND MATTRESS COMFORT

Does body weight affect mattress comfort? Yes, body weight affects mattress comfort and is an important factor to consider when choosing a mattress.

Whether you are a petite, regular-sized, or larger individual you need to select a mattress that offers the best comfort levels and support for your particular needs. Let’s take a look at how body size and weight affects mattress comfort levels.

PETITE PEOPLE

Lightweight individuals will find soft mattresses most comfortable. Their light body weight needs a soft mattress to allow them to sink into the surface and enjoy the feeling of the comfort layer.

A medium firmness mattress will feel firm to a lightweight individual because they do not have enough body weight to compress the top layers. It will feel like they are sleeping ‘on-top’ of the mattress rather than nestled into it.

Petite people struggle to compress and activate the comfort layers of a hybrid mattress. In general, a soft mattress will feel medium, a medium will feel firm, and so on. Aim for a soft mattress.

REGULAR SIZED PEOPLE

Regular-sized people make up the bulk of the population. They are the target market for mattress makers and firmness levels are designed with them in mind. Therefore, they have the most choice when it comes to body weight and mattress comfort.

In general medium firmness will work best for a regular-sized person. But sleeping position and personal preference will influence your decision.

If you like something that feels a little soft medium-soft might do the trick, or if you like a slightly firmer feel a medium-firm hybrid is the one for you.

LARGE PEOPLE

Large people have more body weight and therefore need more support. Their body will push down into the mattress with greater force.

Larger individuals need a mattress that can cradle their body weight and prevent them from sinking too deep. Therefore a firm mattress works best for heavy people.

Soft mattresses are a bad choice. They will simply compress under the larger weight and provide no comfort. Medium mattresses will feel soft to a larger person. And, firm mattresses will feel just about right.

Another consideration for larger people is mattress durability. Make sure you get a mattress that is well built and is durable. Cheap mattresses tend to sag and compress over time – so you need to go for a well-built, durable mattress that will last many years.

MOST COMFORTABLE LATEX MATTRESS

Birch Natural Latex Mattress Review Graphic

BIRCH NATURAL LATEX MATTRESS

The Birch Natural Latex is the most comfortable latex mattress of 2024. It uses an eco-certified natural Talalay latex for consistent zoned comfort and pressure point support.

Birch Natural Latex Mattress Features and Overview

OVERVIEW

The latex is sustainably sourced from tropical rubber tree plantations in Southeast Asia, Africa, and Brazil. And, it is eco-INSTITUT certified to ensure it is free from volatile organic compound emissions.

The Birch is constructed using an organic cotton cover, a breathable wool layer for cushioning and ventilation, a pressure-relieving natural latex core, and an individually-wrapped coil spring support layer. This set-up delivers excellent support, responsive movement, and gentle comfort.

The mattress has a medium-firm feel that will suit most sleepers, but you can add a 3” inch pillow-top layer for added cushioning. The natural latex core and coiled spring layer provide bounce and responsive movement.

This bounce is excellent for mobility – making it very easy to move and reposition when lying on the mattress. The standard model works best for stomach and back sleepers, while the addition of the pillow-top layer is recommended for side sleepers.

If you are a hot sleeper this is a great mattress for you. The organic cotton cover, breathable wool layer, natural latex core, and spring coil base all promote air circulation. They facilitate airflow while you sleep keeping you cool and comfortable during the night.

PROS

RESPONSIVE MOVEMENT

DURABILITY

The Birch Latex is built using durable, high-quality materials. It is built to last and is an excellent long-term investment. It comes with a 25-year manufacturer’s warranty.

CONS

FIRMNESS

The Birch Latex is a medium-firm mattress. If you prefer softer mattresses that allow your body to ‘sink in’ you may find it a little too firm. You can resolve this by adding the optional 3” inch pillow-top layer for soft cushioning.

PETITE PEOPLE

The latex core and innerspring base are an ideal combination for average-weight and heavy-weight people. Light weight people may find it a little too firm.

SIDE-SLEEPERS

The standard Birch Latex model may be too firm for side sleepers. If you are a side sleeper, it is worth adding the pillow-top layer to ease pressure on the hips and knees.

MOTION TRANSFER

The natural bounce of latex and innerspring base means this mattress does not isolate motion. Movement made on one side of the mattress can be felt on the other side. This is the case for all latex and innerspring mattresses.

MOST COMFORTABLE HYBRID MATTRESS

Helix Midnight Hybrid Mattress Review Graphic

HELIX MIDNIGHT HYBRID MATTRESS

The Helix Midnight is the most comfortable hybrid mattress of 2024. It strikes a perfect balance between gentle comfortable cushioning and strong responsive support.

helix midnight hybrid mattress overview

OVERVIEW

The Helix Midnight is an excellent hybrid mattress. It is constructed using a breathable soft-touch cover, a memory foam comfort layer, a polyfoam transition layer, a wrapped coil innerspring core, and a highly durable dense foam base.

This mattress combines the features of memory foam and innerspring in a single hybrid mattress design. This is a great mattress if you want the soft cushioning feel of a hybrid and the bouncy responsive movement of a traditional innerspring.

The Helix Midnight has a medium firmness feel. It works very well for side sleepers – but is a good choice for back and combination sleepers too.

The memory foam comfort layer works well in providing pressure relief on sensitive areas such as the shoulders, hips, and knees. The foam has a slow response that allows your body to gently sink into it.

The spring coil core on the other hand provides bounce and responsive movement. People who like the feel of a traditional bed will appreciate this feature. It aids mobility, making it easier to change sleeping positions during the night.

It works well for cooling too. The mattress cover is made from breathable fabric. And, the wrapped coil springs promote airflow and allow warm air to move away from the body.

PROS

COMFORT & SUPPORT

The Helix Midnight hybrid strikes a superb balance between comfort and support. The memory foam comfort layer provides soft cushioning comfort while the spring coil layer delivers support, bounce, and responsive movement.

SLEEPING POSITIONS

It performs well across multiple sleeping positions but is excellent for side sleepers. The memory foam relieves pressure on sensitive areas – shoulders, hips, and knees. We also recommend it for back and combination sleepers.

MOTION ISOLATION

The mattress does well in terms of motion isolation. The memory foam limits motion travel and means you can adjust your position without overly disturbing your partner.

GOOD CHOICE FOR COUPLES

This mattress works really well for couples. It strikes a great balance between the motion isolation of the memory foam and the responsive movement of the springs – that provide just the right level of ‘bounce’.

COOLING

The Helix Midnight has outstanding cooling properties – much better than a standard all-foam mattress. The breathable mattress cover and the spring core facilitate airflow that will help you stay cool during the night.

GOOD VALUE

The mattress is great value. It comes with a modest price tag compared to its competition – and outperforms many more expensive models.

CONS

HEAVY PEOPLE

This mattress is not a great choice for people on the plus size. It has a medium firmness which works well for regular-sized and light-weight people. However, heavier individuals will do better with a firmer mattress that provides more support.

STOMACH SLEEPERS

It’s also not the best for stomach sleepers. Stomach sleepers will need a firmer mattress that prevents them from sinking down into the mattress. The Helix Midnight might be a little too soft.

HEAVY LIFTING

This is a heavy mattress – like most hybrids. The combination of memory foam, polyfoam, a spring core, and a durable dense foam support means there’s a lot of materials in there. You will need a hand positioning it on your bed frame.

MOST COMFORTABLE CHEAP MATTRESS

Nectar Memory Foam Mattress Review Graphic

NECTAR MEMORY FOAM MATTRESS

What is the cheapest most comfortable mattress? The Nectar Memory Foam Mattress is the most comfortable cheap mattress in 2024. It delivers superb pressure relieving cushioning, great motion isolation and is incredibly good value.

Nectar Memory Foam Mattress Features and Overview

OVERVIEW

The Nectar Memory Foam mattress is a great fit for anyone looking for a contouring, pressure-relieving mattress that won’t break the bank. It is a deeply conforming mattress that scores highly on pressure relief.

The Nectar delivers ample cushioning for the shoulders, hips, and knees making it an excellent choice for side sleepers. And, it works well for back and combination sleepers too.

It is constructed using three distinct foam layers. On top is a 3” inch gel-infused memory foam layer. This is a contouring comfort layer that provides cushioning pressure relief and support for the most sensitive areas.

Below this lies 2” inches of supportive foam to provide bounce and supportive movement. The final foam layer is 7” inches deep and provides strong stable support to the comfort layers above.

We recommend the Nectar for anyone who prioritizes pressure point relief. The soft memory foam of the top layers cradles pressure points and eases pain on the hips, shoulders, and knees. It’s an ideal set-up for side sleepers.

The Nectar scores highly in terms of motion isolation. And, it performs well in cooling for a memory foam mattress. The breathable quilted cover and gel-infused memory foam comfort layer reduce heat build-up while you sleep.

PROS

VALUE FOR MONEY

This Nectar all-foam mattress is outstanding value for money. It is the most comfortable cheap mattress in 2024 and rivals many of its more expensive competitors.

SOFT PRESSURE RELIEF

The three foam layers provide excellent soft cradling support that relieves pressure on the shoulders, hips, and knees.

SIDE SLEEPERS

It is an excellent choice for side sleepers due to its pressure-relieving cushioning but works well for back and combination sleepers too.

COOLING EFFECT

It delivers good cooling effect for a memory foam mattress. The breathable quilted cover and gel-infused top foam layer promote cooling around the body.

COUPLES

It’s a great choice for couples thanks to its superior motion isolation properties. Movement does not travel significantly through the mattress.

EDGE SUPPORT

This mattress has impressive edge support. Many memory foam mattresses sag at the edges but this one holds up well.

CONS

HOT SLEEPERS

Like all memory foam mattresses it is not the best option if you are a hot sleeper. It will not deliver the same cooling effect as an innerspring or hybrid mattress.

RESPONSIVE MOVEMENT

While it performs well in motion isolation, conversely it doesn’t do so well in terms of responsive movement. If you enjoy a mattress with plenty of bounce you should steer clear of memory foam models.

HEAVY PEOPLE

It’s not the best choice for heavy people. If you are on the larger side you will find the soft foam doesn’t provide enough support – and you may feel like you are sinking into the mattress.

STOMACH SLEEPERS

The soft cradling memory foam comfort layer is not a good choice for stomach sleepers. A firmer mattress with more support will work better.

MATTRESS FEATURES

Type: Memory Foam
Firmness: 6/10 medium

MOST COMFORTABLE FIRM MATTRESS

Brooklyn Bedding Plank Mattress Review Graphic

BROOKLYN BEDDING PLANK HYBRID

The Brooklyn Bedding Plank Hybrid is the most comfortable firm mattress in 2024. The Plank comes with two firmness options – firm and extra firm. Even better, both options are available in one mattress.

BROOKLYN BEDDING PLANK HYBRID MATTRESS FEATURES AND OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW

One side has a firm feel and the other has an extra-firm feel. All you have to do is flip it over and pick the side that feels most comfortable for you. You have two firmness options in one mattress.

The Plank mattress is constructed using a breathable cover, a comfort layer consisting of a modest quilted top layer, a high-density support foam, and a core consisting of 6” of individually-encased TitanCaliber coils.

The firm side of the mattress uses 1.5” inches of quilted cushioning, while the extra firm runs with a mere 0.75” quilted layer. You can really feel the difference. The innerspring core provides bounce and responsive movement to support mobility.

This mattress is definitely for people that like a firm feel. It works well for stomach sleepers and back sleepers – offering the support needed to prevent that soft sinking feeling. And, it’s an excellent choice for heavy people who require some extra support.

The Plank performs well in terms of cooling. Its breathable cover and coil core facilitate airflow that will keep you cool while you sleep. And, it performs surprisingly well for a hybrid when it comes to motion transfer.

PROS

FIRM FEEL

If you are looking for a mattress with a firm feel, you’ll be hard-pressed to do better than the Plank Hybrid. It is the most comfortable firm mattress we tested in 2024.

TWO FIRMNESS OPTIONS

The mattress is flippable and has a choice of two different firmness options. One side is firm and the other extra-firm. You can choose the side that feels most comfortable for you.

STOMACH & BACK SLEEPERS

It works really well for stomach and back sleepers. The firm feel provides the support that’s needed to stop you from sinking into the mattress. It also works well for heavy side sleepers that require a little extra firmness.

HEAVY PEOPLE

This is a great mattress for heavy people. Standard hybrids and all-foam mattresses can lack the firm support needed to provide a comfortable night’s sleep for heavy individuals. The Plank does not.

BACK PAIN

The mattress provides the firm support and rigidity which many people require for back pain relief.

COOLING

It performs well when it comes to cooling. The breathable cover and innerspring core promote airflow. This will keep you cool while you sleep. There is also the option to add a cooling panel for extra cooling if needed.

EDGE SUPPORT

The Plank has excellent edge support. There is no sagging at the edges. The firmness of the mattress means it provides impressive support all the way around its perimeter.

CONS

SIDE SLEEPERS

Most side sleepers will fare better with a less firm mattress that provides softer cushioning for the shoulders, hips, and knees. However, it does work well for heavy people that are side sleepers.

FIRM FEEL

This mattress has a firm feel. Depending on which side you choose it will either feel firm or extra-firm. If you prefer a softer feel, then the Plank is not the mattress for you.

PETITE INDIVIDUALS

If you are light weight or a small individual you may be better suited with a softer feel mattress. Petite individuals will find this mattress too firm. Their low body weight will rest on top of the firm surface and feel very little soft cushioning from the thin comfort layer.

MATTRESS FEATURES

Type: Hybrid
Firmness: 9/10
Sleep Trial: 120 nights
Shipping: Free Shipping
Warranty: 10-year
Price Range: $$$$/$

VERDICT

The Plank Hybrid is the most comfortable firm mattress in 2024. The mattress is flippable and allows you to choose between two levels of firmness, firm and extra-firm. It works best for heavy people, stomach sleepers, and back sleepers.

It delivers an impressive cooling effect with its breathable cover and spring core, good motion isolation for a hybrid, and superb edge support. We think the firmness will work well for people suffering from back pain. It comes with a 120-night sleep trial, a 10-year warranty, and free shipping.

MOST COMFORTABLE SOFT MATTRESS

Helix Sunset Mattress Review Graphic

HELIX SUNSET HYBRID MATTRESS

The most comfortable soft mattress of 2024 is the Helix Sunset hybrid mattress. If you like a mattress that allows your weight to sink down into the fabric of the mattress – this is the one for you.

HELIX SUNSET Hybrid Mattress Features and overview

OVERVIEW

The Helix Sunset is the best soft mattress 2024. It is a hybrid mattress that combines two foam comfort layers with an innerspring coil core. The foam comfort layer provides soft cradling comfort while the coil springs deliver support and bounce.

There is no doubt that the Helix Sunset is a soft mattress. It scores a 4 on our 1-10 firmness scale. And, the industry average is 7. The top layer is made from comforting memory foam that has a slow-moving feel and provides great pressure relief.

Below this, you will find a latex foam alternative called “Helix Dynamic Foam”. This foam layer provides more support and bounce. It rests above the final layer which is an individually wrapped coil core.

The coil core delivers strong dynamic support to the foam layers above. It also promotes cooling by allowing airflow between the coils. This draws warmth away from the foam layers above and helps keep you cool while you sleep.

We recommend this mattress if you are a fan of soft mattresses. It works best for side sleepers as the soft comfort layers allow your body to sink in. This relieves pressure on your hips and shoulders. It’s also a good mattress for combination sleepers who are of average and below-average body weight.

PROS

SOFT FEEL

The Helix Sunset is the best soft mattress of 2024. If you prefer the feel of a soft that allows you to sink into it, then this is the one for you.

SIDE SLEEPERS

It’s a great mattress for side sleepers. The soft cushioning of the foam comfort layer relieves pressure on the hips and shoulders for side sleepers.

PRESSURE RELIEF

This mattress is our top choice for gentle pressure relief. The sift feel of the mattress allows your body to sink deep into the comfort layer. This relieves pressure on weight-bearing areas of your body such as your hips, shoulders, and ankles.

JOINT PAIN

If you suffer from arthritis or joint pain this mattress may provide the soft pressure relief you are looking for. Its soft feel allows your body to sink into it without applying too much pressure on any one area.

COUPLES

It’s a great mattress for couples. It performs incredibly well for motion isolation. This means if one person moves on their side of the bed, most of the motion remains on that side, without disturbing your partner.

EDGE SUPPORT

The Helix Sunset has been designed with reinforced coils along the two edges of the bed. This provides strong support along the perimeter edges on either side. You can upgrade to the Luxe model for reinforced edge support along all four edges of the bed – including top and bottom.

PRICE

The mattress performs well on price. It’s in the lower end of the price bracket for the mattresses that made our top 10 most comfortable mattress list. If you’re on a budget, this is definitely worth a look.

CONS

BACK SLEEPERS

This mattress is not a good choice for back sleepers. Most back sleepers need a firmer mattress to provide the firm support needed to keep your spine aligned.

STOMACH SLEEPERS

It’s also not a good choice for stomach sleepers. Unless you are a petite individual it will not provide the firm support needed to prevent you from sinking into the mattress.

SOFT MATTRESS

The Helix Sunset is the best soft mattress of 2024. If you don’t like soft mattresses, then this is definitely not the one for you. It scores a very soft 4/10 on the firmness scale.

RESPONSIVE MOVEMENT

The soft feel of the Helix Sunset means it doesn’t perform very well in terms of responsive movement. Once your body finds a comfortable resting position you will have to work a little if you want to move in the bed. The cradling effect of the foam layers cushion the bounce of the coils beneath.

OFF GASSING

When this mattress is first unboxed you may notice some off-gassing. The good news is, it’s temporary and will dissipate in a day or two.

MATTRESS FEATURES

Type: Hybrid
Firmness: 4/10
Sleep Trial: 100 nights
Shipping: Free Shipping
Warranty: 10-year
Price Range: $$$/$$

VERDICT

The Helix Sunset hybrid is our number one most comfortable soft mattress for 2024. Two foam comfort layers deliver soft cushioning comfort and excellent pressure relief. This makes it an excellent choice for side sleepers and anyone suffering from joint pain – such as arthritis.

An individually coiled spring core provides support, bounce, and airflow for a welcoming cooling effect. It has superb motion isolation and edge support which make it a good choice for couples.

The soft feel of the Helix Sunset is not ideal for back or stomach sleepers – that require more firm support. It comes with a 10-year warranty, a 100-night sleep trial, and free shipping.

MOST COMFORTABLE MATTRESS FOR A BAD BACK

Dreamcloud Luxury Hybrid Mattress Review Graphic

DREAMCLOUD LUXURY HYBRID

The most comfortable mattress for a bad back is the DreamCloud luxury hybrid. This mattress delivers the perfect balance of gentle cushioning, responsive support, and motion isolation for those suffering from back pain.

DreamCloud Mattress Review

OVERVIEW

The DreamCloud luxury hybrid is built using a layered combination of gel memory foam, regular foam, and an innerspring core. It is an excellent choice for people suffering from back pain or sciatica.

The upper memory foam layer provides soft cushioning comfort and the supportive foam layer and spring core beneath deliver strong support. It is this careful combination of materials that strikes a great balance between cradling pressure relief and the support needed for aching backs.

The DreamCloud mattress has a firm feel – that positions it above its competitors in terms of firmness. However, the top memory foam comfort layer offsets the firm feel and allows some sinkage and pressure relief for the hips and shoulders.

Let’s take a closer look at the mattress design. It is made from five layers. The cover is made from a soft feeling cashmere and is a breathable material. Beneath this lies a layer of gel-infused memory foam.

Layers three and four balance the comfort layers above and provide more support and a firmer feel. Finally, the fifth layer consists of an individually wrapped innerspring coil. This coil base delivers excellent bounce and responsiveness that assist movement across the mattress – making it a good mattress for lower back pain.

The mattress works well for all sleeping positions – back sleepers, side sleepers, and stomach sleepers. However, lightweight side sleepers may find it a little too firm – and may find better comfort with a softer mattress.

If you are a hot sleeper you are going to love the DreamCloud. It performs incredibly well when it comes to cooling. The comfort layer is made from gel-infused memory foam that draws heat away from your body while you sleep.

And the quilted cashmere cover is a breathable fabric. Then comes the innerspring core – an ideal material for facilitating airflow throughout the base of the mattress and providing a cool and comfortable night’s sleep.

PROS

BACK PAIN RELIEF

The DreamCloud is the best mattress for a bad back. It strikes an excellent balance between cushioning pressure relief, strong support, and a firm feel that will be welcomed by those suffering from back pain and sciatica.

STRONG SUPPORT

The mattress has a firm feel and is a great choice if you value strong support. Firm mattresses with a responsive bounce work best for people suffering from back pain.

COOLING EFFECT

The DreamCloud delivers excellent cooling effect. A breathable cover, gel-infused memory foam comfort layer, and innerspring core draw heat away from the body.

PRESSURE RELIEF

It performs strongly when it comes to pressure relief. Although it has a firm feel the upper comfort layers contour the body and relieve pressure on the hips, shoulders, and knees.

WARRANTY

The mattress comes with a lifetime warranty. If it breaks from normal use at any stage – DreamCloud will replace it at no additional charge.

CONS

LIGHTWEIGHT SIDE SLEEPERS

People who sleep on their side and weigh less than 130 lbs may find pressure on their hips and knees as their body weight rests on top of the comfort layer rather than sinking into it.

LIGHT SLEEPING COUPLES

The firm feel of the DreamCloud is offset by the responsive bounce delivered by the spring core. Light sleeping couples may prefer a mattress with less responsive movement.

FIRM FEEL

And, the distinctive firm feel of the DreamCloud may not provide enough soft cushioning for people that prefer a soft mattress that allows the body to sink into it.

MATTRESS FEATURES

Type: Hybrid
Firmness: 7/10
Sleep Trial: 365 nights
