Avocado is one of the most highly regarded latex mattress manufacturers in the world. However, latex mattresses are often the most expensive mattresses on the market.
Avocado has stepped up to customers’ needs by producing a streamlined latex mattress that uses high-quality organic materials, delivers in terms of comfort and durability – and is available at a fraction of the price of its high-end models.
AVOCADO ECO ORGANIC LATEX MATTRESS REVIEW
The Avocado Eco Organic is a latex hybrid mattress measuring 10” inches tall. The mattress combines a 2” inch organic latex comfort layer with an 8” inch pocketed coil support base. Let’s take a closer look at how the mattress has been constructed.
LATEX COMFORT LAYER
The latex comfort layer is made using 2” inches of organic Dunlop latex foam. Unlike some of its competitors, the Avocado Eco Organic uses a single seamless layer of latex foam that has quite a firm feel and a reassuring bounce.
The latex foam is eco-friendly, so if you’re looking for a mattress that will reduce your carbon footprint this could be the one for you. The latex used is 100% GOLS certified and is made using at least 95% certified organic latex – the highest possible standard.
SPRING SUPPORT LAYER
Beneath the latex foam comfort layer lies a pocketed coil spring base. The springs are made using recycled steel and each one is individually wrapped to minimize motion transfer and maximize longevity.
Avocado has strategically positioned stronger coils along the perimeter of the mattress to maximize edge support and lower gauge in the central area for gentler support. The springs are manufactured in Avocado’s own Los Angeles based facility.
All of this is encased in an all-natural, organic cotton mattress cover. Organic cotton is a naturally breathable material and allows heat to escape from the surface of the mattress. The cotton is 100% GOTS certified organic cotton.
Below the organic cotton lies an organic wool transition layer. Wool is naturally breathable, fire retardant, and creates a soft comforting layer between the cotton cover and latex foam layer below. The wool is sourced from the Himalayas and is 100% GOTS certified.
The Avocado Eco Organic latex mattress has a firm feel with a distinctive bounce and strong support. We score this mattress a 7.5/10 on the firmness scale – placing it above average in the firmness stakes.
The Dunlop latex foam layer has a bouncy feel that is complemented by the spring base below. If you like a mattress with responsive movement and a firm feel – this could be the one for you. The distinctive bounce makes it very easy to move and change sleeping positions.
We feel the Avocado Eco Organic will work best for average and above-average weight sleepers. Lighter people may feel they are floating on the mattress surface rather than pressing down into it. The slender dimensions of the comfort layer do not allow you to sink too deeply into the mattress surface.
BACK & STOMACH SLEEPERS
We feel the mattress works best for back and stomach sleepers. However, mattress feel is a highly subjective area, and what feels firm for one person may feel soft for the next. With this in mind, we try to establish a consensus for a range of body shapes and sizes.
The Avocado Eco Organic latex mattress has a firm feel. When you couple this with the slender thickness of the comfort layer and the strong support of the spring coil base – we feel it works best for back and stomach sleepers.
Side sleepers may find that the comfort layer is a little too firm to provide the pressure relief needed on the hip and shoulder areas – especially light weight individuals. People weighing less than 130 lbs may feel they are sleeping on top of the mattress and may feel more comfortable on something with a softer feel.
The Avocado Eco Organic latex mattress performs superbly when it comes to cooling. The Dunlop latex foam comfort layer is naturally cooling and so too are the breathable organic cotton and wool materials in the mattress cover.
Below lies the spring base which is ideal for promoting airflow below the mattress surface. When you put all these pieces together you are looking at a mattress with exceptional temperature regulating abilities.
If you are a hot sleeper and need a mattress that keeps you cool during the night, then look no further. We also recommend the Avocado Eco Organic for couples that tend to sleep hot and need a mattress that promotes airflow and cooling during the night.
As part of this Avocado Eco Organic mattress review we took a deep dive into the materials used. And, the results were impressive.
The mattress is made using a range of certified all-natural and organic materials. The Dunlop latex is is 100% GOLS certified and sourced from facilities in facilities in India and Guatemala.
The organic wool is GOTS certified and comes from responsibly managed farms in the Himalayas. Avocado uses GOTS certified organic cotton to make the mattress cover. And, the steel springs are manufactured using double-tempered recycled steel in the company’s factory in Los Angeles.
This mattress has excellent edge support. Avocado has positioned springs of a higher gauge along the edges of the mattress to provide additional support along the perimeter. This means sagging along the mattress edges is minimized.
Edge support is an important characteristic if you want a mattress that allows you to sleep anywhere on the mattress surface – including right up to the edge. It prevents excess sinkage and rounding of the corners. And, it provides welcome support when you are climbing in and out of bed.
RESPONSIVE MOVEMENT vs MOTION ISOLATION
Latex foam has a distinctive bounce and the Avocado Eco Organic is no exception. And, this mattress is a hybrid with a spring base. So, when you put these two mattress technologies together you get lots of bounce.
The Avocado Eco Organic performs well for responsive movement. Its natural bounce facilitates movement on the mattress surface. This makes it easy to change sleeping position and climb in and out of bed.
However, it doesn’t perform well when it comes to motion isolation. Motion isolation is essentially the opposite of responsive movement. A mattress with good motion isolation absorbs motion and doesn’t bounce back. If you’re looking for a mattress with this quality you should skip latex and check out the best memory foam mattresses.
The Avocado Eco Organic latex mattress scores an average rating for pressure relief. While latex foam has excellent pressure relieving properties, this mattress uses a relatively small latex comfort layer. And, it has a firm feel.
While it does a good job of relieving pressure on stress areas such as the hips, knees, and shoulders – some sleepers may prefer a softer mattress. Especially if pressure relief is high on your agenda.
The Avocado Eco Organic is incredibly good value. If you are looking for a latex mattress that won’t break the bank – check this one out. Without cutting corners on quality Avocado has created a streamlined latex mattress that will appeal to most budgets.
The mattress is made using all-natural, organic, and sustainably sourced materials – GOLS organic latex, GOTS organic cotton and wool, and recycled steel. And, it has the certificates to back up the claims.
SUPERB COOLING ABILITY
This mattress delivers outstanding temperature regulation. The breathable organic cover, organic Dunlop latex, and spring core base promote airflow that draws warmth away from the mattress surface and keeps you cool right through the night.
If you’re looking for a mattress with a firm feel you’ll enjoy sleeping on this one. The 2” inch latex foam comfort layer and steel spring core deliver an above-average firmness feel. We’ve scored it a 7.5/10 on the firmness scale.
STRONG EDGE SUPPORT
The Avocado Eco Organic has impressive edge support. The spring coil below the comfort layer has been designed with stronger springs along the perimeter to minimize sagging along the mattress edges.
BACK & STOMACH SLEEPERS
We feel this mattress will work best for back and stomach sleepers thanks to its firm feel and supportive spring coil base. Above average sized side sleepers should do well too – as they will press more deeply into the latex foam.
LIGHT WEIGHT SIDE SLEEPERS
This may not be the best mattress for light weight sleepers. The Avocado Eco Organic has an above-average firmness feel. And, for light weight sleepers, this may feel like you are sleeping on top of the mattress surface.
SMALL COMFORT LAYER
The mattress has quite a small comfort layer – just 2” inches of Dunlop latex foam. While this helps keep prices down, some consumers want to splash out and get a latex mattress that really lets them sink in.
Motion isolation was a key feature in this Avocado Eco Organic mattress review. And, this mattress has a distinctive bouncy feel.
The combination of latex foam and a spring base delivers excellent responsive movement and bounce. But, if it’s motion isolation you’re after you will prefer the feel of memory foam.
